Frank Darabont spent five fruitless years of pitching an idea for a zombie television series. But he's back on Hollywood’s A-list after The Walking Dead, which he created from Robert Kirkman’s original comic book, generated higher ratings in its first season than any of AMC’s previous original shows. Now Darabont has two Hollywood Guild award nominations to go with his three Oscar nods for writing and directing The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile. He talks about his longtime love affair with the undead with Deadline TV Contributor Ray Richmond.

While films have never shied away from dealing with the apocalypse and what comes after, that hasn't always been the case for TV series. Call it an aversion to negativity or not knowing how to keep a story about the end of the world rolling for 24 episodes a year over six or seven years, very few TV series have dealt with the apocalypse in any meaningful way. Lately though, this has started to change.

To be sure, there were a few apocalyptic series from the past but not many.

It looks like a new Doc Savage book is in the works.

The Desert Demons
by Will Murray & Lester Dent writing as Kenneth Robeson

The skies over California explode with blood-red energies that resemble demon cyclones, but behave like intelligent life.

Nothing can stand in their terrible path. Men, machines, even buildings are devoured by the all-destroying Desert Demons. What are they? What do they want?

Far away in his Fortress of Solitude, Doc Savage receives the summons to danger. Radioing his small band of fighting specialists, the mighty bronze man orders them to rush to Los Angeles, prepared to combat the otherworldly menace.

But this time it's different. This time it's personal…

For one of their own has fallen victim to the unstoppable, unearthly things.

Super 8 Poster [photo]

I like the fact that this poster for the movie Super 8 is illustrated. I'm guessing that with this poster writer/director J.J. Abrams is trying to evoke the feel of certain 1980s films like Goonies and E.T. the Extraterrestrial; which are evoked to a certain extent with the Super 8 poster.

I just wish that the poster had been illustrated just a bit better. In the poster it appears as if Super 8 lead Joel Courtney has a bit of a droopy eye like the character Sloth did in Goonies, and actor Kyle Chandler seems to be missing a bit off the top of his head in the poster as well.

Young X-Men don't have the same box-office superpowers as their older selves.

Studio estimates Sunday pegged "X-Men: First Class" at a solid No. 1 opening with a $56 million weekend.

But the prequel chronicling the formative years of the comic-book mutants found smaller audiences than the franchise's first four big-screen adventures, which featured older versions of the X-Men.

How I'll Spend My Summer [photo]

Some of my fondest memories as a teen are of watching movies at the drive-in theater that used to be in Decatur, Indiana. I didn't go there that often, but somehow that experience of sitting out beneath the stars and taking in a movie, or alternatively huddled in a car trying to make out what was happening on-screen as a thunderstorm passed overhead, stays with me to this very day.

That drive-in's been closed for a long while now, but there's not a summer that goes by that I don't think about what it would be like to visit that place just one more time, to take in just one more double-feature covered in bug-spray.

What I've decided to do this summer is to try to recreate that drive-in experience by spending each weekend taking in a double-feature like I used to at the drive-in, only this time in the comfort of my home.
